Chennai: For the second time this month, truck and bus manufacturer Ashok Leyland has announced that it will take five more no-production days at its Ennore plant.

In a notice to employees on Thursday, the company declared September 28, October 1, 8 and 9 as non-working days while September 30 was declared the sixth non-working day.

This is the second time this month that Ashok Leyland has not announced any production day. In the first week of September, the company announced five no-production days at its Ennore plant - September 6, 7, 10, 11 as a non-working day and September 9 as the sixth-day non-working day.

The notice stated, "After discussion with the Ashok Leyland Employees Union (ALEU), the wages payable for non-working days will be fixed."

However, employees engaged in essential services who are required to work these days will be reported 'separately' by department heads. The notice states that employees who will be specifically asked to report for work and not to do so on that day will not be entitled to pay or salary.

Ashok Leyland had 6 production days in June as well as production at its Pantnagar plant. Commercial vehicle companies have cut production due to sluggishness in the truck market and greater capacity among fleet owners.

For example, Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles has cut the number of shifts to accommodate lower demand.
